Physical Education

Physical Education at Weston Favell Primary School

Intent:

It is our intention that Physical Education (PE) at WFPS is aspirational, inclusive and creative. Our curriculum is designed and intends to:

  • Teach our children how to live a healthy and active lifestyle and understand the importance of healthy living and healthy participation.
  • Provide opportunities for our children to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness.
  • Teach our children a range of sports and allow opportunities for them to continually develop an understanding of these, whilst applying and using a range of rules, strategies and tactics.
  • Develop our children’s understanding of the benefits sport can have on their physical and mental health as well as raise their self-esteem.
  • Inspire all children to enjoy, succeed and take part in a range of Physical Activities including gymnastics, dance, games, competitive and non-competitive sports, which can develop competence in gross motor skills and fundamental movement skills.
  • Provide our children with ambitious opportunities to compete in sport and other activities to build character and help to embed core values such as fairness, sporting behaviour and respect.

Implementation:

  • Every child at WFPS receives at least 2 hours of PE a week. The children are also given opportunities at break times and lunchtimes, through our sports coach and young leaders, to take part in physical activities and develop and foster a love for PE/sport.
  • At WFPS, we use Get Set for PE as our whole school PE approach. We chose this curriculum because it is inclusive of SEND and EYFS and marries with our school’s sporting and physical education philosophy.
  • PE at WFPS school provides challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting activities including: Invasion Games, Net & Wall Games, Strike and Field Games, Gymnastics, Dance, Outdoor & Adventure Activities and Swimming.
  • Due to our drive for ambition, we currently engage a sports coach to deliver part of our PE curriculum who is overseen by the PE lead.
  • All children, by the time they leave KS2, will have been given the opportunity to attend swimming lessons and swim 25m.

Impact:

At WFPS, we ensure that our PE curriculum is inclusive and progressive and allows all children the opportunity to acquire and develop fundamental knowledge, understanding, skills and techniques and apply these to a wide variety of different sports and activities. PE lessons are fun, enjoyable and challenging and all children can achieve, to the best of their ability, in a supportive, safe and stimulating environment. Our pupils are physically active, and this has a positive impact on their learning in the classroom. Children understand how to lead a healthy lifestyle and understand the importance of regular exercise and activity for their physical and mental well-being. We aspire for all children to enjoy PE and develop a love of sport and physical activity, which hopefully becomes part of their future life outside of Weston Favell Primary School. Children have opportunities to participate in sport after school and also represent the school at sporting events from local to county level.

In PE, we also measure impact through:

  • Teacher observations and questioning: children participating well in PE lessons, demonstrating the ability to work individually, work with others and cooperate and contribute to working as a team.
  • Pupil voice: children enjoy Physical Education and can talk positively about sports, gymnastics, dance, athletics and Outdoor Adventurous Activities (OAA).
  • Pupil voice: children understand the importance of a healthy lifestyle and are able to discuss this with others.
  • Children learning to swim 25m by the end of KS2.
  • Attendance at extra-curricular clubs by children of all ages.

A-We’ve also been learning cricket

N- By moving around and practising we can learn new skills

C-By doing the skills first that helps us know how to play a game

N- This subject is important in case you want to be a gymnast or a sports person

A-It is important to do PE to stay healthy

KS2

E-We’ve been learning ball skills in netball this half term. We’ve also been building up to exploring how to play a match and how to pass and shoot

E- We build up week by week by learning different skills so learning passing, then pivoting with a pass. Then we add on more each time like blocking and shooting too then having a go at a game in a tournament

E-if we didn’t do this subject it wouldn’t be healthy for us. You need up to an hour a day to help you release endorphins to feel good.

Y-We are also active in after school clubs and with activities at break time and lunchtimes.
